The ideal candidate is able to tailor instruction to help students develop interest and excitement for language learning and to differentiate instruction based on individual needs to help every student achieve academic success.
This candidate should be prepared to teach Spanish to a wide range of learners, from introductory exposure in the lower grades (K–3) through more advanced language study in grades 7, 8, and 9. Points of emphasis in the curriculum include speaking, listening, reading, writing, vocabulary acquisition, and cultural competency.
Other qualifications include:
A minimum of a bachelor’s degree is required; a bachelor’s or master’s in Spanish, Education, or a related field is preferred.
Demonstrated ability to effectively manage a classroom, maintain discipline, and create an engaging learning environment for students. This includes the ability to establish and enforce classroom rules and procedures.
Excellent communication skills to effectively teach language acquisition, including speaking, listening, reading, and writing, to students of varying abilities. The ability to establish rapport with students, parents, and colleagues is also important.
Experience or knowledge of differentiating instruction to meet the needs of diverse learners is highly valuable. This involves adapting teaching strategies and materials to accommodate students with different learning styles, abilities, and backgrounds.
Willingness to collaborate with other teachers, administrators, and support staff to develop and improve the World Languages program. Participation in professional development opportunities and staying updated on current best practices in language instruction is expected.
A genuine passion for teaching Spanish and helping students develop proficiency and confidence in a second language. Patience, enthusiasm, and a desire to make a positive impact on students’ learning experiences are key qualities.
Qualified candidates should embrace boarding school life. They must be willing to teach a full schedule (16–20 periods per week), coach two seasons of sports, and participate in residential life duties as assigned. Interested candidates should send a cover letter and resume to Thomas Pipoli, Dean of Faculty and Academics, at tpipoli@hillsideschool.net.
