Reporting to the Associate Dean for Language Pedagogy & Initiatives, the Assistant Director for Language Education will oversee daily functions in the Language Learning Center, including placement and proficiency assessment, and manage various language learning programs and resources. The Assistant Director of Language Education will work closely with the Associate Dean for Language Pedagogy & Initiatives to execute a strategic vision for language teaching and learning at Tulane.
Function: Language Assessment - Placement – Oversee the assessment and assignment of individual language placements (approximately 2,000 per year) to students in the 12+ languages currently offered for proficiency at Tulane.
- In collaboration with Newcomb-Tulane College, Undergraduate Admission, the Academic Advising Center, the Registrar’s Office, Technology Services, and New Student Orientation, create and maintain processes to see students through language advising and registration.
- In collaboration with Language Program Directors, identify and vet of third-party assessments.
- Support Language Program Directors in the development of in-house assessments.
- Proficiency – Oversee language proficiency testing of Tulane undergraduate and graduate students.
- In collaboration with language departments and programs and graduate programs, create and maintain processes to evaluate students’ language proficiency on recognized and accepted scales.
- Identify and vet of third-party assessments for languages offered at Tulane as well as Less Commonly Taught Languages.
- Oversee test registration, proctoring, and record-keeping.
- Program Assessment – Support language program assessment for beginning and intermediate programs, as well as language minors and majors.
- Assist in the regular assessment of language programs, including ongoing evaluation of program and course-level learning outcomes.
- Common Core – Assist in the preparation and assessment of the Foreign Language component of the Common Core Curriculum for purposes of university accreditation.
- Compile data to assess Common Core language learning outcomes.
- Prepare evidence and write reports for SACSCOC accreditation report

Function: Revenue Generating Language Programming - Support the Associate Dean for Language Pedagogy & Initiatives in the development and implementation of sustainable revenue generating language programming, i.e. summer institute, online programming, certificate offerings.

Function: Language Educational Development - Organize and facilitate workshops and other professional development opportunities for Tulane and community language instructors.
- Provide consultation services to language departments and programs regarding pedagogy and instruction, resources, program development and planning, assessment, etc.
- In collaboration with Associate Dean for Language Pedagogy & Initiatives, plan and host annual Tulane Language Learning Symposium.

Function: Language Center Operations and Budget Management - Ensure efficiency and timely handling of all administrative business of the Language Learning Center office.
- Hires, trains, supervises, and evaluates clerical and technical employees (project assistant and tech support specialist) who staff the administrative office and the technology support room.
- Manage the budget by conducting financial needs assessment (personnel, hardware, academic support resources, furnishings, and supplies) and by performing monthly budget analysis.
- Oversee LLC spaces and resources, and ensure that hardware, software, and materials are updated and in good working order.
- Assist in oversight of Friedrich Stoll Endowed Scholar’s Fund, including calls for proposals, awards selection and distribution, and annual reporting to the Office on Donor Relations.

REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
- BA in a language, language pedagogy, applied linguistics, or a related discipline
- Practical and theoretical knowledge regarding foreign language pedagogy, second language acquisition, and instructional technology
- Experience with language assessment tools and practices
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES/COMPETENCIES TYPICALLY NEEDED TO PERFORM THIS JOB SUCCESSFULLY:
