JOB SUMMARY: The Middle School Chinese teacher teaches sixth, seventh, and eighth grade Chinese with the possibility of an additional section of Chinese in the Upper School as needed. This teacher also works with the World Languages Department on articulating a scope and sequence for Chinese education at OES and possesses a knowledge of current best practices in effectively teaching Chinese language and culture to English speaking students. The teacher cultivates in students the OES values of community, social responsibility, and respect for individual differences. In addition to the qualifications detailed below, the successful teacher will possess excellent communication and interpersonal skills, strong organizational skills, and the ability to collaborate collegially and effectively with all members of the World Languages Department and Middle School faculty. Teachers at OES are guided by the Learning and Teaching at OES faculty growth model and expected to fully participate in the vibrant life of the school; commitments outside of the classroom include leading an advisory, supervisory responsibilities during the school day, and going on off campus/overnight trips. Reports directly to the MS division head.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
- Facilitate dynamic, engaging, and effective learning experiences for Middle School students.
- Manage the classroom so that all students can learn in a safe and respectful environment.
- Establish and maintain appropriate standards for student behavior using Restorative Practice methods which encourage reflection and problem solving and support positive self-esteem and building relationships.
- Develop curriculum with clear learning outcomes, assessments, and means for feedback using a proficiency grading scale.
- Demonstrate proficiency with teaching online classes as needed.
- Communicate with students and parents in a clear, timely, and professional manner.
- Advise a group of Middle School students and attend two overnight grade level trips
- Effectively collaborate with other faculty and fulfill other duties as assigned during the school day including study hall and lunch duties.
- Attend Middle School meetings, Grade-level Team meetings, and Department meetings, and facilitate advisee conferences.
- Serve as a role model for Middle School students.
- Engage fully in school-wide training around diversity, equity, and inclusion and Middle School pedagogical work using culturally responsive teaching and the Social Justice standards from Learning for Justice.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- BA/BS or equivalent in Chinese language, Chinese culture, and/or education.
- Five years’ teaching experience with Middle and/or Upper School students
- Native or native-like fluency in Chinese and strong English speaking skills
- Intercultural competence, ability to interact appropriately with students, coworkers, family members of all backgrounds and identities; ability to teach diverse groups of students effectively, commitment to equity and inclusion
- IT skills: general digital literacy, intermediate to advanced MS Office Suite, database skills, web applications including Google Docs, Zoom, etc. as appropriate to job duties, knowledge of applicable educational technology
- Ability to pass a background check and drug screen
- Authorization to work in the United States
- Documentation of Covid-19 vaccination or religious/medical exemption
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Three to five years’ experience teaching in an independent school
- MA/MS or equivalent in relevant discipline
- Experience with inquiry-based teaching and Project-based learning
- Experience using digital tools and teaching in a 1:1 laptop environment

- Ability to develop curriculum with consideration of scope and sequence, proficiency scale grading, and thoughtful curriculum goals and assessments
- Ability to consistently apply principles of equity, inclusion, and anti-racism in day to day duties and in the broader workplace community
- Ability to maintain a flexible mindset and an innovative approach to teaching; ability to teach online classes as needed
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, ability to collaborate and maintain collegial relations with colleagues, ability to work effectively on teams
- Knowledge of educational technology; openness to innovation, willingness to learn, ability to integrate evolving IT into curriculum
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Primarily classroom environment, ability to sit at a computer and keyboard for moderate periods
- Ability to lift and carry up to 20 pounds on an occasional basis
- Mobility sufficient to move about the OES campus and occasional off-campus locations when on school trips
