The ACTFL Center for Assessment, Research, and Development (CARD) invites applications for its 2020 Internship Program. ACTFL’s mission is to provide vision, leadership, and support for quality teaching and learning of languages. As such, this internship program is designed as a pathway to the profession; its goal is to help recipients (1) explore the field, (2) develop professional & academic skills, and (3) accumulate experiences that will serve as the foundation for future leadership roles.
Interns work in residence at ACTFL Headquarters in Alexandria, VA, and are invited to co-construct their goals in collaboration with ACTFL staff; examples of learning opportunities include:
Contributing to the development of workshop materials
Preparing materials for use in research studies
Authoring technical reports based on ACTFL data and research
Conducting and authoring literature reviews
Performing statistical analyses using software applications
Performing thematic or other qualitative analyses
Contributing to the development of assessment instruments
Editing and proofreading reports
At the conclusion of the summer, interns are required to produce a report based on their area of focus. Reports will be published on the ACTFL website.
Benefits: In addition to the above mentioned experiential learning opportunities, recipients have access to rater certifications, meeting attendance, as well as shadowing opportunities. Interns will also receive a stipend of $1,000/month.
Work Schedule: flexibly scheduled depending on the project. Examples might include:
20 hours/ week (May – July) in Alexandria, VA (Monday – Thursday)
40 hours / week (1-2-month period) in Alexandria, VA (Monday – Thursday)

Selected candidates will be contacted for a web-based interview and will be chosen to commence intern activities in or after May 2020.
* All applicants must be legally eligible to work in the United States.
The application deadline is March 15, 2020.
Interviews will be conducted on an on-going basis during March and April.
Qualifications: Ideal candidates are self-motivated and professional individuals excited about the learning and teaching of languages. Candidates must be a currently enrolled college/university student pursuing a degree, specialization, or minor in languages, linguistics, teaching, or a related field. Recent graduates may also be considered. Additional qualifications include:
Proficiency in English and one or more world languages
Excellent writing, editing and proofreading skills
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, a people-friendly attitude and an upbeat, positive demeanor
Ability to work collaboratively, cooperatively and collegially
Strong organization, planning and time management skills
Adept use of Microsoft Office Suite required, especially regarding the creation of reports, graphs, tables and presentations
