The Hotchkiss School
Position Summary: The Language Department has an opening for a highly-qualified, collaborative and dynamic teacher who has significant knowledge of the Spanish language and Spanish speaking cultures, combined with an understanding of effective foreign language pedagogies. The School is eager to consider applications from those who identify with groups traditionally underrepresented in independent school communities. Qualifications: The candidate will possess native or near-native fluency in both Spanish and English, and will have the ability to teach courses through all levels of the curriculum. A bachelor’s degree in Spanish or an equivalent is required, and a master’s degree in Spanish or a related discipline is preferred. Preference will be given to candidates who have lived or studied abroad in a Spanish-speaking country for a minimum of one year and to those who are comfortable using technology in the classroom. At least three years of teaching experience, ideally at the secondary level, is preferred. The ideal candidate will be dedicated to making positive contributions to the student experience both inside and outside the classroom, including in dorms, on teams & clubs, and through advising. Duties & Responsibilities: Teaching responsibilities will include teaching four sections of Spanish (involving two or three distinct course preparations). The applicant will be expected to participate actively in community life through service in Hotchkiss’ residential, advising, and co-curricular programs. Typical responsibilities of a full-time faculty member at Hotchkiss include teaching four classes, coaching two seasons (or the equivalent) of a co-curricular (sports team, Debate team, Yearbook, et al.), 1-2 nights of duty per week and one weekend of duty per month in a residential dorm, and periodic service on faculty committees and/or as an advisor to student clubs. Faculty members who serve a residential role receive year-round housing (plus utilities), and meals when school is in session. Full-time faculty members are generally expected to obtain a public service endorsement on their CT drivers license within the first year of employment, so that they may drive students in school vehicles. Compensation: Salary is competitive and commensurate with experience and education level. Hotchkiss provides a comprehensive benefits package, which includes a variety of health insurance offerings, dental, vision, life, and short- and long-term disability offerings, HSA/FSA options, and retirement benefits through TIAA-CREF. Ample funding exists to support participation in professional conferences, workshops, summer study, and travel, as well as advanced degree work. Application Information: Through the online application, interested candidates should submit a cover letter with résumé/CV, a statement of teaching philosophy, relevant college and graduate school transcripts, and three references.
