New Trier is seeking a dynamic, progressive leader to be the department coordinator for our Modern & Classical Languages Department (MCL). The department coordinator is housed at the Northfield Campus, which is the campus for freshman students. Primary responsibilities for the position are supervising approximately 14 MCL faculty members at Northfield, collaborating on curriculum development throughout the department, articulating with sender school teachers, determining incoming freshmen course placement, and serving as a leader on the Northfield Campus. Department leadership is shared with the MCL Department Chair who is located on the Winnetka Campus.
The Modern and Classical Languages (MCL) Department recognizes that at the heart of language learning is the ability to communicate. Communication promotes understanding, tolerance and respect for others. The curricula in the MCL Department are shifting to better meet the needs of New Trier students and to align with the World- Readiness Standards. The department offers seven languages with a range of courses, from first year to Advanced Placement. Some courses are taught as multiple ability groups, while others are mixed-level courses. New Trier students complete an average of 3.4 years of language study. Courses in MCL are built around thematic units and essential questions with some classes using textbooks and others teacher created materials. Teachers in the MCL Department collaborate to determine common course objectives and to develop materials. Teachers use a variety of methods, including mobile learning experiences to reach the common course goals. The MCL facilities include department offices, classrooms, and three Multimedia Language Labs that are staffed by technology specialists.
The MCL Department Coordinator will work with other stakeholders as a member of the Northfield Campus Leadership Team.
