About Westminster School
Westminster School is dedicated to providing a classical elementary and middle-school education whose fundamental goals for each child are a disciplined and well-informed mind, strength of character, dedication to learning, generosity of spirit, and joy in the possibilities of life. The Westminster program is founded on a traditional curriculum, rigorous academic standards, and an atmosphere that promotes respect, kindness, integrity, and a sense of excellence. Westminster’s academic program provides exceptionally thorough training in basic subjects within a broad humanities curriculum. The Classical tradition, great books, and participation in the arts are emphasized and integrated throughout an accelerated, thoroughly rounded program.
The academic program is designed not only to instill factual knowledge and academic skills, but to develop intelligence and strength of character in each student. To accomplish these goals, instruction is presented in a structured classroom environment which stresses good study habits, organizational skills, and personal responsibility. The curriculum consistently emphasizes depth of learning, critical thinking skills, development of oral ...and written expression, and high expectations for student accountability. This rigorous approach is taken in the belief that most children, when imaginatively motivated and well taught, will benefit enormously from the challenge and stimulation of intellectual discipline.
Westminster believes in the importance of developing body and spirit, as well as mind, and of striving for balance among these energies. To those ends, students attend daily P.E. classes in all grades and are offered a variety of team sports in grades 4-8. Creativity and the confidence to explore and share talents are nurtured through regular art, music, and dance classes, as well as the school’s outstanding drama program. All students participate in a class play every year, culminating in a Shakespeare play in 7th grade and a Broadway-style musical in 8th grade. Alumni routinely cite their Westminster drama experiences as among the most valuable in preparing them for their future lives.
Westminster School has developed a well-designed and consistently delivered program for raising and educating exceptional young people. Our graduates stand out, not only because of their advanced academic knowledge and skills, but because of the way they carry themselves—with dignity, courtesy, kindness, and confidence.
Teachers at Westminster appreciate the school's well-established mission/philosophy, and curriculum guides and classroom resources, small classes, high standards for student responsibility and comportment, a beautiful facility, a lively calendar of fun traditions and school-wide celebrations, engaged and supportive parents, highly diverse community, and exceptional support from peers and administrators.
