CIEE Global Navigator Programs facilitate study abroad programs for over 1700 students. Significant growth in the summer Langauge and Culture Programs has provided the opportunity to develop proprietary curriculum for the 4-week summer language programs. Programming is task-based and integrated into the heart of the study abroad experience, to ensure that the student connects to the language and culture to truly become a lifelong language learner. Students are taught by on-site native language instructors and are supported by US Teachers (Program Leaders) who travel with them from the US and keep strudents engaged outside of the classroom.
Summary of Position: The Language Teaching and Curriclum Specialist develops, manages, and evaluates language learning for CIEE. Reporting to the Vice President of High School Study Abroad, the Language Specialist will manage the design and implementation of CIEE’s task-based curriculum for Summer Study Abroad programs. The Language Specialist will manage development of Language Curricicula for existing and new study abroad sites; manage and evaluate pre and post-testing of students; facilitate evaluations of language teaching effectiveness; develop and provide training and support for CIEE resident staff and language instructors; and collaborate with teams across CIEE to achieve strategic goals and to maximize student learning. Successful candidates will have editorial skills to not only contribute to effective curriciculum but also to select and manage editorial freelancers to produce best-in-class, standards-aligned curriculum for language learners.
Success for this job takes the second-year pilot curriculum and transforms it into a fully developed, task-based curriculum that wholly integrates culture and place into the study abroad experience for the Global Navigator students. You will make sure that the instructions are clear, teachers are trained, overseas resident staff are trained, and that the authentic resources are top-notch. You should be excited about interacting with many different cultures, managing challenging projects, and ready to tackle technological challenges to make sure CIEE Global Navigator programs engage high school students with world languages successfully to build proficiency and love for learning languages.
Primary Responsibilities: Student Learning: Success means that students have a fun, engaging experience overseas where they enjoy language class and prove proficiency development through pre and post-test scores and assessments. ? Develop, maintain, and update language curricula, syllabi, and co-curricular cultural activities that achieve the goal of maximizing student language acquisition and cultural development ? Manage evaluation and assessment of student language learning via qualitative and quantitative measures ? Analyze pre-/post-experience language proficiency data; relate data to curricular effectiveness ? Research, review, and identify technologies appropriate for language instruction ? Design language learning activities for CIEE’s pre-departure online orientation Curriculum Development: Success means that CIEE has standardized curriculum that is locally adapted in each program site. Documents and materials not only provide CIEE with best in class, successful language programming but also demonstrate that CIEE is the leader in place-based world language instruction for high school students. ? Create and update development guidelines as needed ? Manage and evaluate structure of curriculum components ? Source and manage editors or editorial teams, when needed. Editors can be used to ensure that lessons are clear, professional, and true to task lessons ? Setting and managing workflows for curriculum development. Could include working with outside consultants, CIEE resident staff, and freelancers ? Proof read any material that comes from teachers and/or editors to ensure quality and consistency ? Manage a temporary employee or freelancers to develop proprietary files of authentic resources and manage seeking copyright permissions for these resources ? Collaborate with resident staff in CIEE study centers to ensure that programming calendar, program activities, and logistical items match learning goals Staff Training and Assistance: Success means that resident staff understand learning goals and strategies, on-site teaching staff is hired, trained, and prepared to deliver curriculum and any additional materials are created to support other CIEE staff staff. ? Provide pedagogical training and support for resident staff via one-on-one coaching, in-person workshops, and online training ? Provide ongoing technical support for language learning and assessment to resident staff and instructors ? Identify a cohort of CIEE resident staff to mentor and develop their capacity as language learning resources for their regions ? Create program leader training units (online and in-person) and protocols to ensure that program leaders understand their role in program deliveryAssist in hiring protocols of language program program leaders—could include job definition, skills identification/definition, and interviewing Research and Promotion: Success means that you stay engaged in the world language teaching field and that CIEE develops a meaningful network to distribute outcomes to the field. ? Share information about CIEE’s language initiatives to member institutions ? Identify and network with experts in language learning and education abroad ? Establish CIEE as a leader in language education by presenting at relevant conferences and by publishing in relevant publications
Knowledge & Skill Requirements: ? Master’s degree in applied linguistics, second language acquisition, international education, intercultural communication, curriculum and instruction, educational leadership, or related field (required) ? Minimum 3 years of experience in design and delivery of language acquisition (teaching) and experiential learning (required); deep understanding of best pedagogical practices surrounding language acquisition and experiential learning (preferred) ? Knowledge of language proficiency assessment methods, both qualitative and quantiative (required) ? Minimum 3 years of project management experience (required); experience with complex workflows and outside contractors (preferred) ? Expertise in world language standards (ACTFL and others); ability to create a scope and sequence and build instructional lessons to meet them ? Knowledgeable about best practices for professional development ? Ability to resolve complex issues in an intercultural work environment (required) ? Ability to manage multiple projects to ensure successful delivery on time and within budget in order to achieve clearly stated goals (required) ? Excellent written and oral communication skills (required) ? Experience with Canvas LMS or other similar LMS platform (preferred) ? Fluency in English and proficiency in a second language (required); proficiency in three or more languages (preferred)
